Chinese Dragon Pinata
Description
In China, dragons are associated with good luck, long life, and wisdom. For this reason, "Dragon Dances" are performed on the Chinese New Year to frighten away evil spirits. During the dance, performers hold poles to raise and lower the dragon, sometimes to the beat of a drum, giving it the illusion of "dancing."
Even if you don’t have the ability to fashion your own giant dragon this holiday, you can always recreate the ceremony with a colorful piñata! Tie this multi-hued dragon to a branch or pole with a rope, and then tug it gently to move the creature up and down. Hey, you can even ask a friend to pound a few drums while you do so (to set the proper ambiance, of course)! Best of all, once you get bored with all this contrived dancing, you can celebrate Chinese New Year in the next sweetest way -- by bashing this dragon with a bat until he rains candy and treats down upon your head! Now how’s that for good luck?
